Sometimes a traditional swing can be the best baby swing. They are often times overlooked, but there are a few benefits to having a traditional swing verses a cradle swing. For one, most offer a more upright seated position which can be great for babies that suffer from reflux. They also take up less room, and most can be folded and easily stored, not like a cradle swing that becomes a permanent fixture in your home.
The following list includes some of the best traditional swings currently on the market. Below each description you will find a link to my full in-depth review, as well as links to Amazon with current sale prices. Lovin Hug is a must have baby item,November 30, 2010
We have two of these swings – the “Devon” pattern, and the plug-in “Happy Day Pooh”. The Devon is now 3 years old and the motor is starting to go, but it was used every day for about a year and a half, naps and bedtime. It’s now living at the grandparents’ house as a back up.
The Pooh patten is the exact same swing, but with the wonderful addition of being a plug-in (can use batteries too). Our newest baby does not sleep well flat, and the while the recline on this swing is deep it is upright enough to keep him happy.
Best: 5 point harness, deep recline and multiple positions, 6 speeds from barely moving to warp (though as the baby gets heavier, all the speeds slow down), timer, soft seat.
Worst: nature sounds and music are horrible, loud motor (but my boys liked the click-clack), large footprint, when baby is heavier it eats batteries.
Overall, this cannot be beat..
Sooths our twins,March 8, 2010
By Scot R. Looker “Scot”, (Boonton, NJ USA)
The swing is instrumental in soothing our twins. I will put one in it while I take care of the other, then switch. It’s a great swing. My daughter loves the mobile. It has different speeds for swinging, which is great since my daughter is very sensitive and swing slower than my son. It has music right and nature sounds on the unit, with volume control. It is a little difficult to buckle them in, especially when they are crying, but it is very secure once they are in. Never used the swaddling accessory. The batteries last a long time. I have only changed them once since we’ve began using it (3 months). We use it every day. It is quiet when the music is off. The seat is adjustable. The straps are adjustable.
The Graco Sweet Peace Newborn Soothing Center is designed to mimic a mothers motion, touch, sight, sound, and sent. It offers multiple seating, cradling, and reclining positions, two speeds of soothing vibrations, low frequency sounds or white noise, such as a mothers heart beat, and calming womb sounds, as well as high quality music and nature sounds. The Graco Sweet Peace also offers an MP3 plug in, so you can listen to anything you’d like, plus it also has an adjustable canopy with a built in mirror and hanging soft toys for entertainment. In addition, the Graco Sweet Peace Soothing Center can be used with any Graco Infant car seat. Simply remove the seat from the frame, and put the car seat on. Graco Sweet Peace Features & Specifications:
As for reviews, 124 out of 163 reviewers rated it 4 to 5 stars, with 5 being the max. Most loved the Graco Sweet Peace Soother and stated that they couldn’t live without it. There were a few complaints that the motor was too loud, however several others stated that they could barely hear it. It’s also a bit big and heavy and takes up some space, but then again, most swings do. All in all, most people loved their Graco Sweet Peace Soother, and would recommend it to anyone. still works and using with #2,May 22, 2011
I bought this Graco Swing 3 years ago for my first son. He had to be swung a certain way.. and the Graco Sweat Peace Soothing Center was the only thing I could find that would mimic the motion he liked. We used it with our first and now with our 2nd baby boy who is now 4 months old, and it’s still working like the day we brought it home. I also have another open top swing that was given to me, the motor sounds the same on either one. So I would not say that it is any noisier than any other baby swing.
~I loved the fact that it had an outlet for the wall, because If I had to change batteries, I would have only used it till the first set went dead.
~that you can put the seat in any position
~I love that I can put the car seat in it when we get home I don’t have A) another contraption for that and B) just leave the car seat on the ground where he would more than likely just wake up since he was not moving anymore.
~it has variation of sound levels. I read other reviews that said it was pretty much loud or louder.. which on mine the plus and menus button goes up to the loudest and then the more you push the menus it goes down in volume like you would expect (not sure if this is because mine is an older model from 2008)
~the choices of music.. you have your mp3 station, soothing sounds, softer music, and then a choice of the more upbeat music which my son prefers
~it also has a spot to attach a binky so they won’t fall on the floor
~the toys on it are something that my first son got bored of fairly fast. so I usually just put something else on the theater that he would actually play and chew on (the teether was too big for my son to even begin to put in his mouth
~the toys on the canopy are just put on with Velcro, and they don’t stay.
~it is a bit heavy and hard to move around, (but at the same time which is a pro it’s sturdy)
~the swaddle.. both my son’s were too big for it! my 1st I can understand he was over 9 pounds at birth, but my 2nd was only 7 pounds and 19 inches long, so for him to be too big for it, I would have to say it was probably made for a preemie. Unless I just don’t know how to wrap in a swaddle blanket.
All in All I would recommend the Graco Sweet Peace Soother to anyone (which I have) and I will be using it for future children as long as the motor holds up which it has been still working great, so I don’t see an issue with that
Great swing!,April 17, 2011
We really love the Graco Sweet Peace for a few reasons:
1. Control over the speed and direction of the swing… fits whatever mood our son is in.
2. The music options are wonderful! Real music with real sounding instruments, instead of chimey tunes that repeat. Also, each option plays enough pieces of music on a rotation that it doesn’t drive the adults in the house crazy.
3. We love that it has the iPod connection for when we get tired of the pre-programmed music.
4. It’s great that it fits the Graco car seat as well as the seat that comes with it.
5. The vibration setting is great.
6. Graco Sweet Peace plugs in… I don’t want to think of how many batteries we’d have gone through already.
I took off one star because:
1. I wish it reclined a little more. Although you can adjust the recline from sitting up to mostly lying down, I wish it reclined to an almost totally lying down position. Sometimes when my son falls asleep in it he scrunches down and gets uncomfortable, which wakes him up.
2. I wish the canopy came a little further down. It stops right over his head, where it doesn’t really block much sun, and he can’t really see the toys.
The Fisher-Price Papasan Swing offers both the head-to-toe traditional swinging motion, and the side-to-side cradle motion, as well as 6 soothing speeds. The comfy, cozy seat offers two reclining positions, as well as a 3 point restraint to keep your baby safe and secure. The Papasan Swing also has two music modes, daytime, and nighttime, with 16 songs total, and two sound effects. The rotating mobile offers three soft toys, and an overhead light show that projects onto the tailored sheer canopy. The Papsan Swing also offers a removable snack tray with a toy bead bar. The seat pad is also removable and machine washable, and the sturdy steel frame folds for easy storage and portability. The Fisher Price Papasan Swing comes with an AC adapter that will plug-in to any outlet, and also has the ability to run on battery power. Features and Specifications:

As for reviews, the Fisher Price Papasan Swing did really well, with 1,079 out of 1,307 reviewers rating it 4 to 5 stars, with a max of 5. In other words, about 83% of the reviewers were extremely pleased with their purchase. As far as the bad reviews go, most were older and pertain to older models, but a few of the newer ones complained about a defective motor, which was then replaced by Fisher-Price. All in all, most of the reviewers loved the Papasan Swing, and would recommend it to anyone. See below what some of the current owners had to say about their Papasan Swing.
This is my first review but I felt like after the hundreds of dollars that we’ve spent on baby items this one is by far above and beyond and deserves some recognition. I started out with the bright starts comfort and harmony swing (we have a fairly small house so I was trying to find a small compact swing that could fold and be tucked away easily). After a nightmare of a swing the fisher price papasan swing came to the rescue. My son is 5 months old and in about the 50th percentile for weight and this swing still is staying strong. The seat looks so comfy I just want to curl up next to him. I read a few reviews about the motor being loud, and I don’t agree, this is actually fairly quiet I think. ALL swings make some noise. I have tried out friends as well as the one at grandma’s house and this seat is awesome it is the only one he will sit in for longer than 15 seconds. This seat is more like an extra comfy car-seat in that it has a plastic frame/bucket which supports under the babies while a lot of baby swings just have fabric pulled across a metal frame creating a sink hole for the infant to sit in with no support. I wish I could convince everyone to at least try this swing.
A Must-Have Baby Product,May 26, 2011
This Fisher Price Cradle Swing has been a life and sanity saver for us! We have the Papasan Swing in Starlight. My son falls asleep so easily in this–it soothes him almost immediately.
1. It swings in two directions: side to side and front to back. I’ve heard many babies prefer one way over the other, but you can’t know before baby tries it so we wanted one that goes both ways. Our son much prefers front to back, but if we have more children and they prefer side to side we’ll still be all set.
2. It is round and nest-like, which I think makes him feel secure. I’ve heard this type of swing is very helpful for colicky babies. If he gets gas at night and doesn’t want to be flat on his back in his crib we’ll bring it into the bedroom and he usually falls right asleep.
3. The motor is quiet. There is a “swish, click” sound, but I think it’s soothing to my son and I have no trouble reading or napping with it going.
4. It can run on batteries or plug in. We can take it on our porch on nice evenings, and since we plan to move overseas this is a nice feature.
5. The music isn’t annoying, although I’ve gotten a little tired of it. It is a mix of classical songs, nursery rhymes, and some songs I don’t recognize. The nature sounds are also soothing to my son.
6. It’s beautiful! We have it in our living room and I didn’t want anything with garish primary colors. It fits right in with our gray-blue and brown living room. The blue is a little purpley, so it could easily be a girl or boy’s swing.
7. The net helps prevent my dog from sniffing/licking the baby’s face (something I am paranoid about!)
1. I wish it had a central on/off switch. There are six buttons to control speed, music, mobile, etc. It would be nice if one switch turned it all off and you could switch it on to go back to the previous settings.
2. The mobile is a little boring–it has two stuffed stars and a teddy bear. The soft pastel colors are beautiful but don’t catch my son’s eye.
3. You can move the headrest up and down, but I wish it was removable (it’s sewed in with a tab and has different velcro positions). It works great now (my son is 6 weeks old), but as he gets taller I think it might get in the way.
This is by far my favorite baby product; if we could only have one thing this would be it. I’m sure we would BOTH spend a lot of time curled up in the fetal position crying if it wasn’t for the Fisher Price Papasan Swing! You can’t put a price on a product that helps your baby sleep.

As far as reviews go, the Fisher Price Snugabunny Swing did excellent! 232 out of 278 reviewers gave it 4 to 5 stars (out of 5). The only real complaint I found was that the lowest speed still seemed a little fast for newborns. Reviewers also commented that once the baby was about 1 month, the speed problem wasn’t an issue. Also, there were a couple defective swings with bad motors, but all in all, 90% of the customers were extremely satisfied. Check out customer feedback below.
Soft and Soothing, July 17, 2011
I bought the Fisher Price Snugabunny Swing for my new grandaughter, and she loves it. She naps in it daily (she is almost three months). The materials are VERY soft, washable and make a little nest for her. The sounds are great to lull her to sleep, as is the overhead mirror. So far she has used the side to side motion only. I wish the swing I had for her dad had been like this one!
Couldn’t live without, July 13, 2011
By Heather S, (MN)
I got the Fisher Price Snugabunny Swing shortly before I gave birth because we had nothing for him to swing in. I was amazed at how easily it went together, I was in my 3rd trimester and still able to get the whole thing together in about 30 minutes and the instructions were really easy. The first week we had the baby home we used the lowest setting because it seemed to swing fast, but now he is 3 months and we put it up to the highest setting. The Snugabunny Swing overall seems very sturdy and I like that you can easily take the fabric off to wash it in case of accidents. I would recommend this swing to anyone who wants a few moments of peace (the only reason I can write this review is because my son is currently swinging away, fast asleep).
